Nogin-Sox

My Introduction to Noginsox

May 15th, 2012 by Betsie

Last weekend (4/14) I attended the Bicycle Festival in Mesa, AZ. As I was strolling down a street filled with old bikes, new bikes, and every possible bicycle part and accessory I came across noginsox. What are noginsox you ask? Well… they are foam helmet covers – they say to promote kids wearing their helmets. Anyway they had spike ones, cutsie ones, and even lighted ones. I was so intrigued I bought one – a T-Rex, and they’re right. They ARE fun.

Ergonomic Pourers

February 7th, 2012 by GadgetCrazy

Did you know that there is a whole song about recycling? It’s called “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!” and my eight-year-old has been singing it ad nauseam for the past three days. He’s learning all about recycling in school and the damaging effects landfills can have on the environment.

This has naturally made him curious about ways in which our own family can improve our recycling. He did some research online and found a product called Twist and Spout. It’s a gadget that turns any old soda bottle into an ergonomic pourer or watering can. With my help he ordered a set online using his allowance. He cannot wait for them to get here so he can start being a better recycler.

Chatting Made Easy

January 24th, 2012 by GadgetCrazy

I’m grateful that in my early 80s I’m still able to live independently. I was worried that my daughter would insist on my moving in with her. Don’t get me wrong; I love my daughter and grandchildren, but I’m old not incapable- in other words, I enjoy my freedom. To put my daughter’s worries to rest, I agreed to purchase a cell phone so she can get a hold of me when I’m out and about.

Unfortunately, I found that holding the tiny cell phone to my ear for extended periods of time was uncomfortable. I did a little searching online and found a website that specializes in independent living aids. On the site they featured an easy to hold handset. The handset looks like a standard landline receiver and it fits right into the 2.5 mm earphone jack of my cell phone. Gripping the handset is far easier and makes chatting with my daughter for long periods of time more comfortable.

Looking Sharp, No Matter the Distance

December 29th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

This past summer I traveled to five weddings in two months. That’s a lot of weekends on the road! Most of the weddings were held in locations several hours from where I live, so it was cheaper to drive than to fly.

In order to keep my dress attire wrinkle free, I installed auto clips in the back seat. These clips gave me plenty of space to hang my suits, dress shirts, and ties. No matter how long I spent in the car, when it came time for the ceremony, I always looked sharp.

Respecting A Mothers Independence

June 24th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

independent-womanMy mother is preparing herself for when she gets older. She has informed my sister and I that she will not go to an assisted living facility. Stubbornness is the one thing that she will never run out of. She is determined to be able to take care of herself.

Since she is so determined to maintain her independent living situation, my sister and I made sure that her home was equipped with what she needed. Independence is important to everyone. We wanted to make sure that she was comfortable to take care of herself like she wanted.

May 3rd, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

Making Long Car Rides Bearable

April 20th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

seat-belt-light“Are we there yet?! Are we there yet?!” Hearing that phrase used over and over on a long car ride can drive a parent nuts. While the average adult is content to listen to a book on tape or take a nap, kids need some entertainment.

Rather than have your kids spend hours watching television shows and movies, why not use a long road trip as an opportunity to spend time reading? Go to their favorite bookstore and let them pick out a few novels, graphic novels, or comic books. They can read their new books using a seat belt light. The ingenious little light will illuminate the pages of their books without being a distraction to the driver.

Party Gags

April 6th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

frozen-smileThere’s nothing quite like a good prank. I was working on planning a summer party and couldn’t resist finding a new prank. (Whoopee cushions are so last year).

I found a great gag item called “Frozen Smile.” They’re essentially silicone molds in the shape of dentures. Fill them up with water and stick them in the freezer. When my guests came for the party, I handed them beverages with Frozen Smiles inside. They all thought it was a big hoot and asked what sort of gadgets I’d used to pull off the prank.

Crazy Pet Owners

March 22nd, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

I’ve never gotten into competitive dog shows. I’d rather watch the Puppy Bowl than the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. My friend, Susan, on the other hand is obsessed with competition. She is working towards getting her Manchester terrier competition ready.

Granted, her terrier is gorgeous. Its black and tan fur is perfectly groomed and glossy. Though I don’t quite understand Susan’s obsession, I want to be supportive so I started looking for pet gadgets that might help her get her dog competition ready. In the end I couldn’t find something that would be useful, so I bought her a ceramic tile with the words “I [heart] My Manchester Terrier.”

Safety with a Twist

March 8th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

trexI’m not sure when or why helmets got the reputation of being “un-cool.” In my mind, a simple, lightweight device that will keep your brains from spilling out of your skull in an accident is pretty awesome. Still, there are many people who just don’t like the way helmets look.

To encourage my kids to always wear their helmets, I bought them Nogin Sox. Nogin Sox is a company that creates soft foam helmet covers in fantastic and funny shapes. For my son, I bought him a cover that is shaped like a T-Rex head and for my daughter I bought one that looks like a lit up brain. Both love showing off their helmets to their friends.

Maximize Calorie Burn

February 25th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

pinkJumping rope isn’t just for little girls and Double Dutch teams. Jumping rope is a means of burning serious calories. Consider this: jumping rope can achieve a burn rate of up to 700 calories per hour, approximately 0.1 calories consumed per jump. Ten minutes of jumping burns the same calories as running an eight minute mile. You can burn off all the calories from a candy bar with just 15 minutes of jumping rope.

With such amazing results, it’s no wonder that so many athletes incorporate jump roping into their daily exercise routines. If you’re looking to get in shape you should start jump roping for small increments of time each day. A digital jump rope will help you time your work-outs and keep track of how many jumps you’ve completed and how many calories you’ve burned. Get in shape with this fun, easy exercise tool!

Uses for Water Broom

February 11th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

broomWater brooms combine the best of two appliances, the push broom and power washer. I use my water broom for all sorts of cleaning projects around the home. I regularly wash my driveway and sidewalk. The powerful streams of water blast away loose dirt and I scrub off the rest with the broom bristles.

I even convinced my husband to clean the garage floor with the water broom. The dirt and grime washed away with ease. I’ve even used the water broom to remove leaves, moss and other dirt deposits from my roof. My gutters have never been so clean and functional!

Kayaking in the Florida Keys

February 10th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

If you love exploring clear blue waters, the Florida Keys is definitely a destination you should add to your travel list. The warm waters are perfect for swimming and the white sand beaches are great for lounging in the sun. More active vacationers will love exploring the keys in clear bottom kayaks.

A clear bottom kayak gives an exquisite view of the tropical fish known to inhabit the Florida Keys water. These lightweight, clear bottom boats are best used in calm waters. You can take a leisurely paddle around the keys and admire the natural beauty. This is a great alternative for people who want to see tropical fish but aren’t keen on scuba diving.

Cracking Down on Underage Drinking

January 27th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

A teenager’s job is to rebel and a parent’s job is to discipline. Teenagers are naturally curious about all sorts of things, especially drugs and alcohol. Even though it’s not legal for U.S. citizens to purchase alcohol before the age of 21, it is incredibly easy for underage teenagers to get their hands on alcohol. For instance, one of my friends in high school got suspended for a week of school for showing up intoxicated to the Homecoming dance, and she was hardly the only one at the dance who had imbibed prior to the event.

Naturally, my friend’s parents were furious. They took steps to ensure that there would not be a repeat episode. They went through all of her belongings for alcohol and poured any that they found down the drain. They locked up their liquor cabinet with a new lock and bought an alcohol breath tester. When she was finally un-grounded, she had to submit to breathalyzer tests before and after she hung out with her friends. These measures may seem harsh, but I can assure you that my friend learned her lesson and never showed up drunk to a school function ever again.

Learning via Exploration

January 12th, 2011 by GadgetCrazy

In my opinion, the best way to learn about nature is to go out and explore. We recently purchased a summer cottage on a small island that is dotted with little inlets, bays, and coves. My two young boys are absolutely fascinated by sea life.

As a Christmas present this year I bought the family a clear kayak. Now when we go to our summer cottage, the boys can go out on the kayak and see even more sea life up close. They can take pictures, maybe capture a few specimens, and then look up online what sort of creatures they came across. I can’t wait to give the new kayak a whirl!

Confirm your suspicions

December 28th, 2010 by GadgetCrazy

Trust is the foundation on which healthy relationships are built. In a good relationship you should be able to communicate openly and honestly with your significant other. But what do you do when you think your partner is covering up an affair? There’s no need to air your dirty laundry on the Maury show, instead, you can order an infidelity test.

An infidelity test usually tests bodily fluids to see if they match you and your partner. Simply find an article of clothing that you believe is stained with someone else’s fluids and send it in with the rest of your kit to a testing facility. You should have a definitive answer within a few weeks. If it turns out your significant other isn’t cheating, we recommend counseling to figure out where the trust was broken. Best of luck to you!
